Naturalists are known notetakers. This 5 x 8 inch lined notebook is compact enough to carry into the field, but large enough to hold many thoughts! Since the first Christmas bird count in 1900,field notebooks have been used to record birds seen on Christmas Day. Many of us simply journal our thoughts and make to-do lists in notebooks like this one.

The Steller’s Jay, known as a fearless picnic visitor and camp robber, lives year-round throughout western North America. Found mostly in coniferous forests, they range with the seasons at elevations from 3,000 to 12,000 feet. This blue beauty provides a bright splash of color to snowy Colorado mountain winters. The Steller’s Jay is named after German naturalist, George Steller, who documented this bird during his exploration of Alaska with the Bering Arctic expedition in 1741.
