Artist Statement

The original painting for this print was created using watercolor and ink, and was commissioned by and published in Backpacker Magazine as the title page for their annual feature, “Hiker’s Handbook”. This piece was inspired by North American topography and all the magical outdoor places I have ventured in this beautiful country.

I wanted to capture the beauty of our diverse land in a densely layered landscape of marshland, rivers, desert, sand-dunes, canyons, forest, and mountains. I included many elements that are close to my heart – Mariposa lilies and Indian Paintbrush wildflowers, massive redwood trees, beavertail cactus, and the stunning rock formations from Arches National Park and Bryce Canyon in Utah. The bright high-saturation colors of this limited palette create a dream-like quality across the different topographic features, inviting you adventure into the wild and just maybe get lost.

About Giclee

Giclee signifies the highest quality print available, and is known for unparalleled detail in reproducing orginal artwork. This piece is printed with pigment inks on a 100% cotton rag, acid-free, lignin-free, fine art paper, which I personally picked for its rich color rendering and toothy texture, to mirror the feeling of the original painting.

This reproduction is archival (museum quality) and will stay true to its original rendering well beyond the point at which other prints may start to fade. To ensure the longevity of this piece, it should be framed behind glass.
